How it works How to take it Side effects Safety information Ingredients FAQs

How it works

Sildenafil blocks an enzyme called PDE5, which lets the blood vessels in the penis relax and open. More blood flows in, so an erection becomes easier to get and keep. It does not work on its own - you still need to be sexually aroused, and it does not change libido or desire.

How to take it

One tablet, about an hour before sex
Swallow whole with water. Never take more than one dose in 24 hours.
A heavy meal delays it
A large or fatty meal can push the onset back by around an hour. Alcohol can make it less effective.
Give it a few attempts
Most prescribers suggest trying a dose several times before judging whether it suits you. Tell us if it doesn't and we can review the dose.

Side effects

Common effects include headache, facial flushing, indigestion, a blocked or runny nose, dizziness and mild visual changes such as a blue tinge. These usually pass as the dose wears off.

The full list is in the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine. Report anything unexpected to us or via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Seek urgent medical help if you have an erection lasting longer than four hours, sudden loss of vision or hearing, or chest pain during sex.

Never take sildenafil with nitrates (such as GTN spray) or riociguat - the combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

Tell us about heart or liver problems, low blood pressure, a recent stroke or heart attack, or any inherited eye condition. These may mean sildenafil isn't safe for you.

Ingredients

Active ingredient: sildenafil citrate, equivalent to 25mg, 50mg or 100mg sildenafil per tablet.

Excipients vary by manufacturer - the exact list for the pack you receive is in its patient information leaflet. Flagged for verification against the supplied product's SmPC before publication.

FAQs

Why is sildenafil cheaper than Viagra?

Viagra's patent has expired, so other manufacturers now make the same active ingredient. You are paying for the medicine rather than the brand.

Can I take it every day?

Sildenafil is taken as needed, with a maximum of one dose in 24 hours. If you want something suited to more spontaneous use, ask your prescriber about tadalafil.

Is it safe to use long term?

Sildenafil has been prescribed since 1998 and is well understood. Your prescriber will review your treatment periodically and you can message the clinical team at any point.
