Two types of pill, and how they actually work
Both are more than 99% effective when taken correctly - around 91% with typical real-world use, where the difference is almost always missed pills. The right one for you depends on your health, not the price.
The combined pill
Microgynon, Rigevidon, Yasmin and others
Contains two hormones - an oestrogen and a progestogen. It works mainly by stopping your ovaries releasing an egg each month, and also thickens the fluid at the neck of the womb so sperm can't get through.
- How it's taken: one pill a day for 21 days, then a 7-day break (or run packs together - safe, and many prescribers prefer it).
- Often also helps with: heavy or painful periods, acne, PMS.
- Not suitable if: you get migraine with aura, smoke over 35, have a history of blood clots, or very high blood pressure - that's why we ask for a recent BP reading before supplying it.
The mini pill (progestogen-only)
Desogestrel, Cerazette, Cerelle, Hana and others
One hormone, no oestrogen. Desogestrel pills stop ovulation in most cycles and thicken cervical fluid. Because there's no oestrogen, most of the combined pill's restrictions don't apply.
- How it's taken: one pill every day, no breaks. Same time each day matters more than with the combined pill.
- The usual choice if: you're over 35 and smoke, get migraine with aura, have raised blood pressure, or are breastfeeding.
- Worth knowing: periods can become irregular or stop - annoying for some, a bonus for others, harmful for neither.
Who can order online
This service is a repeat supply for anyone aged 18–50 already using a pill a clinician started them on. You'll need a blood pressure reading from the last six months - free at most pharmacies. Starting contraception for the first time? Your GP or a sexual health clinic should talk the options through with you first.

How to get a free blood pressure check
You need a reading from the last six months. Three easy ways to get one, all free:
- -Any high street pharmacy offering the NHS blood pressure check service. No appointment, takes five minutes.
- -Your GP surgery, often via a self-service machine in the waiting room.
- -A home monitor, if you already have one. Take two readings a few minutes apart and give us the lower.

Can I switch pills through Yip? +
Sometimes. If you're switching for side effects, a prescriber may be able to move you to another pill - but if you're unsure what you need, your GP or a sexual health clinic is the right place.
What if I don't know which pill I'm on? +

Do you supply emergency contraception? +
Yes, through the pharmacy shop with a short set of suitability questions - but if you need it now, a local pharmacy will be faster than any delivery.
