Read this before starting finasteride
Mood and mental health. Finasteride has been associated with depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. In 2025 the MHRA strengthened its warnings on this. If your mood changes while taking it, stop and contact a clinician - us, your GP, or 111 - straight away. In an emergency call 999 or the Samaritans on 116 123.
Sexual side effects. Reduced libido, erectile difficulties and problems with ejaculation are recognised effects. They usually resolve after stopping, but have been reported to persist in a small number of men.
Other risks. Finasteride can lower PSA readings, which matters if you are being screened for prostate cancer - tell any clinician testing you that you take it. It must not be handled by anyone who is or may become pregnant.

What's actually happening to your hair
Male pattern hair loss is genetic and driven by dihydrotestosterone, a hormone made from testosterone. In men who are susceptible, DHT gradually shrinks the follicles at the temples and crown until they stop producing visible hair.
It's progressive, so the realistic goal is holding position rather than reversal. Follicles that have already closed don't reopen - which is the honest reason to start earlier rather than later.
Treatment is ongoing. If you stop, loss resumes from where it would have been, usually within six to twelve months.
When to see a GP instead
These patterns can point to thyroid problems, iron deficiency, alopecia areata or a scalp condition - all of which need diagnosing before treatment.
Common questions
How long until I see anything?
Three to six months before change is noticeable, and up to a year to judge properly. Some men see more shedding in the first weeks - that's expected and usually settles.
Can I use both treatments?
Often yes - they work differently, one hormonal and one topical. Your prescriber will say whether combining them is appropriate for you.
What if I get side effects?
Stop and message the clinical team. With finasteride, any change in mood should be treated as a reason to stop and speak to a clinician the same day.
Do I need to keep reordering?
You can set up a subscription and pause or cancel it whenever you like. Each review repeats the mood screening.
